Cheap Flights: 13 Insider Tips for Finding the Best Deals
If you’ve ever Googled “how to find cheap flights?” you’ve likely stumbled upon all sorts of ridiculous tips like “Flights are the cheapest if you buy them on Tuesdays,” or “Clear your browser cookies to get better prices.” I’ve seen and heard it all.

The £9 Miracle: My Cheapest Flight Ever
Having taken over 200 flights, I’ve found that most of them were cheaper than my bus ride to the airport. No joke—the cheapest flight I ever scored was just £8.99 That’s less than the cost of a fancy coffee or a dubious-looking hot dog at the station. And if I can do it, so can you!
And no, I’m not talking about cramming yourself into a suitcase and flying in cargo (because apparently, it doesn’t work 😂 –LINK).

Smart Tips to Keep Your Cheap Flight Costs Even Lower
But wait, there’s more! This isn’t just talk—I’m not leaving you high and dry with just theory. This post is packed with real-life examples and screenshots to show you exactly how to use these tricks. Think of it as your personal flight-hacking manual, complete with visual aids and, of course, a few bonus memes for good measure.
So fasten your seatbelt, pour yourself a glass of wine (preferably cheap so it matches the budget-friendly vibe of this post 😃) and get ready to save some serious cash on your next adventure.
1. Your Superpower – FLEXIBILITY.
Think of flexibility as your secret superpower in the quest for cheap flights. The more you can bend and twist your travel plans, the more likely you are to snag a killer deal!
When I was working at the travel agency, clients often came with very specific requirements, like “Can you find me a cheap flight (under £50) from London Gatwick to Ibiza from August 1st to August 8th?” While I’d love to wave a magic wand and make that happen, the reality is, if you’re locked into super-specific dates and destinations finding cheap flights can be pretty tough. Airlines and travel sites often reserve their best deals for travelers who are open to adjusting their plans.
While there are tools (which we’ll dive into later) that can help you get the best price if your requirements are set in stone, the truth is that flexibility leads to much better deals.
For instance, if instead of specific requirements you say “I want to go somewhere sunny in the autumn,” you open up a world of possibilities. Your chances of scoring an awesome deal just went up exponentially!
Tips for Maximizing Flexibility:
-
Play with Your Dates: Sometimes, moving your trip by just a day or two can lower the price. Many sites offer a calendar view with outlined prices.
-
Destination Roulette: If you’re flexible about where you go, you might find cheap flights to places you didn’t even know existed.😃
-
Use Flexible Search Tools: Most of the sites have tools that let you search for cheap flights across a range of dates or to multiple destinations. Release its power (later I’ll tell you how).
By embracing your inner travel chameleon and being open to changing your plans, you’ll be amazed at how many great deals you can find. So, put on your flexibility cape and get ready to save big—your wallet (and your inner travel guru) will thank you!
Since many of us are childfree, we have almost an unfair advantage in this travel game.😜 You can ditch the school schedules and family commitments, giving you the ultimate freedom to snag spontaneous bargains. Sure, you might have work or other constraints, but that childfree flexibility? It’s a game-changer! Use it to your advantage, and watch how easily you can score those amazing flight deals.
2. Search for Deals and Discounts!
Let’s talk about scoring those elusive cheap flights. Airlines and travel companies are constantly running promotions and discounts, but usually, they don’t advertise them widely. They’ll drop fares, throw flash sales, and even mess up their pricing from time to time. By knowing where to look and how to search effectively, you can tap into these exclusive offers and save big on your next trip.
How to Master the Art of Deal-Hunting
-
Become a Deal Detective: Channel your inner Sherlock Holmes and hunt down those elusive cheap flight deals. They might not have flashy billboards, but they’re out there—waiting for you to find them! The more you search, the better your chances of finding a killer deal.
-
Act Fast: When you find a great fare, grab it quickly—otherwise, you might be left staring at the “Sold Out” sign while kicking yourself. These websites are checked by hundreds of people daily so the deal posted today might not be valid tomorrow. It’s a battle of wits, a test of endurance, and a race against time as you try to snatch up those cheap flights before they disappear into the ether… Isn’t it exciting?😜
-
Keep an Open Mind: Sometimes the best deals are for destinations you didn’t even know you wanted to visit. Embrace the adventure and be open to flying somewhere unexpected if it means saving a ton of cash.
- Flexibility Is Your Best Friend: Remember our first point. Flexibility is not just nice to have, it’s your secret weapon. The more open you are with your travel dates and destinations, the more likely you are to score a deal that makes your jaw drop. It can mean the difference between a good deal and a great one.
My favourite Websites for Scoring Deals:
-
Fly4free: Imagine a magical portal that shows you jaw-dropping flight deals from your country. That’s Fly4free! It’s packed with awesome offers and amazing discounts from around the globe. Just choose your location, and watch as deals magically appear. Think of Fly4free as your personal treasure map for cheap flights.
I’ve scored some of my best deals here. For example, I found return flights to Bali for 289£ , Thailand for 271£ and Barbados 197£. Since then, it has become my daily obsession.
-
SecretFlying: Another fantastic resource for unearthing flight deals. SecretFlying is great at finding error fares, discounts, and flash sales. Pick your departure city, and you’ll receive targeted deals that could make your travel dreams come true.
If one day a ‘good morning’ message from a guy will make my heart beat the same way the alert about a new post does, that will be the very day I get married 🤣.

If you live in Europe:
You’ve hit the jackpot when it comes to finding cheap flights.
Budget airlines like Wizzair and Ryanair announce flash sales from time to time so it’s worth keeping an eye on these.
You can sign up for their newsletters to get the scoop on discounts straight to your inbox, or if you’re a bit obsessed (like me), you might find yourself checking their websites every day like a deal-hunting ninja.
Pro Tip: Not all sales are as sweet as they seem. Sometimes, prices are hiked up just before a sale to make the discount look better than it actually is. In point 6, I will tell you how to keep track of prices so you don’t get ripped off.
3. Use Search Engines like a PRO to Find Cheap Flights.
Let’s talk about search engines—your secret weapon in the battle for cheap flights. Search engines can scour hundreds of airlines and booking sites to find you the best prices which means you don’t have to. They’re like having a super-efficient, flight-finding robot at your service who’s way better at finding flight deals than you ever could be!
Search engines are especially useful when you have specific requirements, like those exact dates you’re tied to or the destination you’ve got in mind.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Search Engines:
-
Be Flexible (Yes, Again): Remember, the more flexible you are with your travel dates and destinations, the better the deals you’ll find. Search engines make it easy to explore different options and see where you can save the most.
-
Check Multiple Sites: Don’t just stick to one search engine. Comparing results across different platforms ensures you’re snagging the best deal out there. It’s like shopping around for the best price before you commit.
So, fire up these search engines and get ready to uncover some amazing flight deals.
The Big Names that Everyone knows:
Skyscanner: The Popular Cheerleader Who Sometimes Plays Hard to Get
Skyscanner is great for comparing flights across a bunch of airlines and booking sites. It’s like the cool friend who knows all the best spots.😎 If you’re flexible about where you want to go, its “Everywhere” search can lead to some amazing surprises. If you’re locked into specific dates, it still helps you compare options across multiple airlines and booking sites.
Personally, I use it the least. I found the calendar grids with prices often don’t match the actual prices when you click through. It’s like finding a sale sign, only to discover the sale ended yesterday. Still, it’s useful for comparing options, but don’t be surprised if you find some discrepancies.
Google Flights: The Wizard of Wallet-Friendly Weekends
Google Flights is a fan favourite for a reason. You can play around with the “Explore” map to see where you can fly within your budget, and the “Date Grid” helps you figure out which days will make your wallet the happiest. If you’re hunting for cheap flights on specific dates but open to different destinations, Google Flights is your go-to.
Also, Google Flights has this fantastic feature where you can search for ‘weekend’ trips. This is perfect if you’re stuck in the Monday-to-Friday grind and need a quick city escape. Just plug in your destination (or search ‘Anywhere’), add the ‘weekend’ filter, go to flexible dates, select the month you want to go, and voilà—suddenly you’ve got a selection of budget-friendly options for a mini-vacation without burning through all your vacation days.
Kayak: The Price-Stalking, Deal-Sniffing Sidekick
Consider it your no-nonsense sidekick in the quest for cheap flights. Kayak is solid, especially with its “Price Alerts” that keep you informed about fare drops. It’s a straightforward option for finding and comparing cheap flights, particularly useful if you’re set on specific dates and destinations.
Momondo: The Cheap Flights Genie in a Bottle
Momondo is like the Aladdin’s lamp of cheap flights—give it a rub, and it’ll work its magic. While the big names above are great, Momondo holds a special place in my heart. It not only compares prices but also combines flights from different airlines to create the best possible itinerary. It’s like having an extra set of eyes to find those hidden gems in airfare.
My TOP Lesser-Known Favorite:
-
Azair: It allows for extensive flexibility in dates and destinations, often uncovering those sweet deals that other search engines might miss. It’s my secret weapon for finding these £9 kind of flights.😎 Disclaimer: Azair is less useful for long-haul flights or non-European destinations.
How to Use Azair.eu to Find Cheap Flights
-
Enter Your Departure Airport(s): Start by typing in the airport or airports you can fly from. I encourage you to include multiple departure points to see even more options.
-
Specify Your Destination: Input your destination if you have one in mind, like “Lisbon.” If you’re still deciding, you can enter an entire country, such as “Portugal,” to explore various possibilities.
-
Set Your Travel Dates: Enter the dates you can fly between. This helps Azair.eu find flights that fit within your available travel window.
-
Adjust Your Stay Duration: Choose the minimum and maximum number of days you want to stay. This allows you to find trips that fit your desired length of vacation.
-
Select Layover Preferences: If you prefer direct flights with no layovers, set the ‘max changes’ to zero. This will ensure that Azair.eu only shows you flights with no stops.
-
Hit ‘Search’: Click the ‘Search’ button and watch as Azair.eu works its magic.

Feeling Spontaneous? Try ‘Anywhere’ Mode!
If you need a little bit of inspiration, you are feeling spontaneous or have a last £20 in your account and you are wondering where it can take you, choose ‘Anywhere’. This option gives you a list of places you can visit around the world, sorted from the cheapest.
On a Mission? Go ‘One Way’!
If you’re plotting a dramatic escape or thinking of starting a new life, select ‘One way.’ Sometimes, the most thrilling adventures come from ‘throwing caution to the wind’ and seeing where a cheap flight can take you.😃
So, fire up these search engines and get ready to uncover some amazing flight deals.
Search engines vs trust issues
The “Best” Deal May Not Be Best:
Those search engines often show you the flights on which they make the most money from. That “amazing” deal might just be a clever ruse to get you to click. So, always compare prices on multiple platforms. Think of it like dating: don’t settle for the first profile you swipe right on! Your perfect flight might be hiding elsewhere.😀
Check Airline Websites Directly:
Sometimes, airlines themselves offer better deals than those search engines. They might have special discounts that don’t show up on third-party sites (e.g., discount codes you need to submit at checkout) or discounts only for members (e.g., Wizzair Discount Club). It’s worth checking the airline’s official website to see if there are any special deals or discounts not available through search engines.
Not only check airlines direct website but also buy from airlines directly.
When search engines display flights from budget airlines (for example Ryanair, Wizzair, or EasyJet) they often redirect you to their partners’ websites for booking. Instead of clicking through these links, take note of the flight details and visit the airline’s own website to book your ticket. This way, if there are delays or cancellations, dealing directly with the airline is usually much smoother than wrestling with third-party troubles. It’s like cutting out the middleman to avoid extra drama!
Anyway…Don’t let the digital magic show mislead you—do your homework, explore multiple sources, and book wisely.😎
4. Travel Off-season = Cheap Flights
How to Determine Off-Season Times:
- Research Your Destination: Off-season varies by location. For instance, Europe’s off-season is typically from November to March, excluding the holiday season. Tropical destinations might have an off-season during the rainy months.
- Check Weather Patterns: Make sure the off-season weather is still agreeable for your travel preferences. Sometimes the off-season coincides with extreme weather conditions, which might not be ideal for everyone.
- Keep in mind: Some attractions may have limited hours or be closed during the off-season. Do a little research to ensure that the key sites you want to visit will be open.
Being able to travel at off-peak times or during less popular seasons can save you a significant amount of money! I know—it’s easy to say when you have no kids (my top recommendation—don’t 😜). As we know, tickets during school half terms and around bank holidays are the most expensive.
Also, flying on off-peak days like Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays is often much cheaper than flying just before the weekend on Thursdays or Fridays. However, these trends are not always consistent and may vary depending on the airline and the route.
Try to avoid travel during peak summer (July-August in Europe) as well as around Christmas and New Year’s Eve. That’s when the prices skyrocket.

5. Book in Advance to Lock in Cheap Flights
Here’s a common myth: Many people believe that flight tickets get cheaper as the departure date approaches, thinking airlines will slash prices to fill those last few seats. Spoiler alert: It’s a lie, especially for budget airlines and standard economy flights. In reality, waiting until the last minute often means paying more, not less. If you’re looking for cheap flights, booking in advance is your golden ticket. Prices generally go up as the departure date gets closer. Airlines are savvy; they know that last-minute bookers are often desperate, and they’re ready to charge a premium.
Optimal Booking Windows:
- Short, European Flights: For these, the best prices usually appear around 7-9 weeks before departure.
- Long-Haul Flights: With longer flights (11+ hours), the timing can be less predictable. Sometimes the best deals are available 6-8 months in advance, but occasionally, you might find a good offer at the last minute. However, this is more of an exception rather than a rule.
What to Do If You’re Ready to Book:
If you’re tied to a particular destination or have specific travel dates in mind, booking in advance is your best bet. (However, don’t book immediately; we’ll dive into this in the next point.) It’s not just about snagging a good deal; it’s also about reducing stress.
What to Do If You’re Flexible:
If you’re more of a “let’s see where the wind takes us” type and don’t have set plans, keep an eye on the deal websites mentioned in point 2. This way, you can book a trip once you find a good offer.
So, if you know where and when you want to go, booking in advance will save you time and stress. But if you’re open to spontaneous adventures, keep an eye on those websites and book when a deal that makes your heart race appears. Either way, you’re setting yourself up for a great trip with a little extra cash in your pocket!😎
6. Keep Calm and Set Price Alerts for Cheap Flights
Flight prices are always changing, sometimes multiple times a day. It’s easy to miss out on great deals if you’re not keeping an eye on them. By using price alerts, you can stay on top of price changes and snag the best deals without the stress of constant monitoring.
Here’s a simple strategy to make sure you get the best price possible:
Immediate Deals:
If you find a flight deal on the websites mentioned in point 2, don’t wait around—book it right away. Prices on these platforms are the best you’ll find, and they’re unlikely to drop further. Acting quickly ensures you snag the deal before it disappears.
The Waiting Game: When to Hold Off on Buying Cheap Flights
However, if you’ve found a flight on your own, like through search engines or directly on airline’s website, and you’ve got more than 8 weeks until your departure (for short flights), hold off on buying immediately. Instead, set up a price alert. You can use sites from point 3 like Google Flights, Skyscanner, or Kayak to set them up. You’ll be notified when prices drop or when a good deal appears, allowing you to make a move at the right time.
To be honest, I use these from time to time; however, I have another lesser-known favorite.
Telegram: Your Secret Weapon for Cheap Flights
Telegram is free for both Android (available on Google Play) and iPhone (App Store). You’ve probably heard of it (or have it installed already) since it’s a communication app. However, you might not realize that you can use it to find cheap flights. Let me tell you how: There is a great automatic bot called #Airtrack. If there are specific dates of flights you’ve found, go to menu and create a new alert for that connection. The bot will send you a message as soon as the flight price changes either up or down. This way, you will never miss a deal again!
Just be careful – with these alerts, you get a notification every time the price of that flight changes so sometimes it happens to be at 2-3am.💤😴 Good offers never sleep!😃

If you prefer the desktop version, you can download it – HERE

7. Don’t Be Loyal (this is not relationship advice 😃)
For some reason, many people think they need to book both flights with the same airline as if it’s a rule or unspoken loyalty pact. Spoiler alert: you don’t! We already talked about using search engines for cheap flights but some people still prefer checking each airline’s website (or their app) directly, especially if they frequently travel the same route. (Shout out to all the immigrants travelling to their home countries). Looking at airline websites is totally fine, but it’s time to break free from that mono-airline mindset and start mixing things up in order to get cheap flights.
Think of booking tickets with different airlines as your new travel game plan. It’s like having a cheat code for scoring cheap flights. Sure, it might take a little more effort, but it can save you money. For example, you might book a one-way flight with one airline and a return flight with another (consider this being a flight swinger :D). With budget airlines, there’s no discount for booking a return ticket with the same carrier. There are flights from different airlines to the same destination, and most often, it’s much cheaper to mix and match.
By mixing airlines, you not only save money but also get more flexibility in flight times.
To illustrate, let’s do a quick case study.
Imagine we’re planning a short city break to Barcelona from 7th to 9th June.
If we go with Ryanair for both flights, the cost is £86.29
If we choose easyJet for both flights, it’s £97.98
But if we mix things up:
Outbound flight with Ryanair and return with easyJet: £76.45.

This difference might seem small, but in many cases, you can cut the price of your tickets by as much as 48%, especially if you’re flying from larger airports with multiple airlines serving the same destination. This strategy can seriously boost your travel budget. So, ditch the loyalty and try out some new airline combos.

Give them a chance to surprise you!
Many people tend to avoid certain carriers due to past bad experiences or negative stories they’ve heard. Personally, I know at least 10 people who swore they’d never fly with Ryanair again (by the way, their social media posts are just savage if you like a slightly rude, sarcastic sense of humour).
But hey, why not give them another shot? It might feel like taking that toxic ex back for the tenth time because he promised he’s changed but in this case, choosing the airline you previously gave up on might save you some money (unlike your ex, airlines actually do change! 😃).
So, be bold, take a chance, and let yourself be pleasantly surprised. Sometimes, the best deals come from the places you least expect! 😃✈️
8. Widen Your Horizons—Consider More Airports
Alright, let’s talk airports. Most travelers stick to the airport they know best, but the real pros (that’s you, after this post) play the field.
I know, I know—everyone loves the convenience of flying out of their favorite closest airport. That cozy little spot where you know the best coffee kiosk and how long it takes to get through security. However, by doing this you might be missing out on a world of potential savings because nearby airports could have way better deals! 🌍 Sometimes, the difference in ticket prices can be mind-blowing, and very often, the cheaper option is just a train or bus ride away.
Think Beyond Your Usual Spot
If you’re serious about snagging cheap flights, it’s time to broaden your horizons. The more airports you consider, the better your chances of finding a ridiculously cheap flight. Sure, it might mean an extra hour on a train or a slightly longer drive but the savings can be totally worth it.
Big Cities, Big Choices
In larger cities, there are often multiple airports serving the same area. More airports mean more competition, which can drive down prices. It’s like a bigger buffet—you get to pick and choose the best (or the cheapest).
Small Airports: Hidden Gems
While big cities boast multiple airport options, don’t underestimate the value of smaller, lesser-known airports. Often, these hidden gems offer really juicy deals. They might not have the same flashy amenities as the bigger ones, but when your flight ticket is half the price, who’s complaining? 😎
Use Search Engines
We’ve already talked about using search engines like Skyscanner or azair.eu to compare prices. But don’t forget to use the ‘nearby airports’ or ‘(City name) (Any)’ feature to show you even more options.

Pro Tip: If you’re unsure which nearby airports to check, a quick Google search will usually provide a list or map of all airports in your area.
Pro Tip 2: Do your research in advance. Before buying your ticket, check how you will get to the airport and the associated costs. Be mindful that if your flight is at night or early in the morning, public transport services might be limited. A cheaper flight might not be a bargain if it involves a pricey or lengthy transfer.
Here is a list to get you started:
-
-
London:
- Heathrow (LHR): The big player, but don’t overlook…⬇️
- Gatwick (LGW): Often has competitive prices and is only a train ride away.
- Stansted (STN): Great for budget airlines and can save you a bundle.
- Luton (LTN): Another good option, especially for low-cost flights.
- London City (LCY): Conveniently located near the city centre, primarily serving lesser-known and regional airlines.
- Southend (SEN): Tiny airport, located about 60 km from central London
-
New York City:
- JFK (John F. Kennedy): The main hub, but check out…⬇️
- LaGuardia (LGA): Close to Manhattan and can have lower fares.
- Newark (EWR): Often offers competitive prices and fewer crowds.
-
Paris:
- Charles de Gaulle (CDG): The primary airport, but consider…⬇️
- Orly (ORY): A bit closer to central Paris and sometimes cheaper.
- Beauvais (BVA): Located about 80 km away, often used by budget airlines.
-
Rome:
- Fiumicino (FCO): The main international gateway, but don’t forget…⬇️
- Ciampino (CIA): Popular with budget airlines and often has lower fares.
-
Barcelona:
- El Prat (BCN): The main hub, but also check…⬇️
- Girona (GRO): About 1.5 hours away by bus, often serves budget airlines with great deals.
- Reus (REU): Another nearby airport, perfect for budget travellers.
-
By checking all of these airports, you’re unlocking a world of flight deals that most people never even see.
So, next time you’re booking a flight, don’t just stick with the airport you always use. Explore, compare, and save big!
9. Don’t Be a Point A to Point B Stickler – Mix It Up! (Difficulty Level: Medium)
You’ve already learned about the benefits of considering multiple airports, but here’s where we take it to the next level.
If you’re planning a trip longer than 4-5 days, why limit yourself to flying into one city and back out of the same one? Here’s the secret: you can save serious cash and add a dash of adventure by flying into one city and out of another. 🤫
This trick works especially well in Europe, where affordable transport options like buses and trains connect cities seamlessly. For example, you could fly into Barcelona, soak up the sun, and then catch a budget flight home from Madrid. Not only can you explore multiple destinations, but you often end up paying less for your flights.
Attention:
Search engines are excellent for finding cheap flights to and from multiple airports within the same city or nearby airports. However, they struggle with handling flights involving different cities. For instance, if you select multiple cities as your destination (a feature offered by search engines like Kayak, Momondo, and Azair.eu), the results will show flights to and from each city individually. This means that while you can choose multiple destinations, the search engine will only provide round-trip options for each destination separately, rather than suggesting a combination of flying into one city and out of another.
This means you’ll need to do a bit of manual searching to find the best cheap flights combos. It’s extra effort, but it can lead to really big savings and a more interesting itinerary!
Here’s how you can do it:
- One-way trip: Head to your favorite flight search engine. This time, instead of searching for a round-trip ticket, look for a one-way ticket to your first destination or to ‘Anywhere’ if you’re feeling adventurous. 😜 (or if you listened to me in previous points)
- Map It Out: Once you’ve picked your initial destination, use Google Maps to explore nearby cities and airports. This will give you a better idea of your options for returning home from a different city.
- Search for a return ticket: Go back to the search engine and find a one-way flight from the new city or airport you’ve discovered back to your home.
- Check for ground transport options between the two cities. *
- Book Direct: Once you have your flights lined up and have confirmed that there are affordable transport options between the cities, visit the airlines’ websites directly (or just one, if it’s the same airline) to purchase your separate tickets.
- Enjoy more of your destination! Spend a few days in each city, and maximize your experience while minimizing costs.
This approach not only makes your trip more adventurous, but it also opens up new possibilities for savings. So, ditch the old-school A-to-B-and-back mindset—this little secret might just become your favourite travel strategy for cheap flights.
*Where to check for ground transport options between the cities:*
Google Maps (public transport tab)
Everyone knows Google Maps. It’s a go-to for figuring out local transport routes. Just use the ‘Public Transport’ tab to see how to get from Point A to Point B. However, there’s a catch: Google Maps doesn’t always provide the ticket prices or the exact way to purchase them. Depending on the country, you might need to buy your ticket from the driver, at the station, from a ticket machine, or even only with cash. If you’re like me and prefer to have everything planned out in advance (hello, social anxiety!🥲), you might want to do a bit of extra research on the local transport system.
Car rental
If you’re traveling with a group, renting a car can be a flexible option. Some car rental companies offer the convenience of picking up a car at one airport and dropping it off at another. Just keep in mind, there’s usually an extra fee for this service. But hey, it might be worth it for the freedom to cruise around without worrying about public transport schedules. Plus, you can blast your road trip playlist and pretend you’re in a movie clip.😃
When I travel with my family (obviously adults-only) or friends, most of the time we use Skyscanner (yup, not only flight tickets :D) or DiscoverCars.
My favourites:
FlixBus
FlixBus is hands down my favorite bus company in Europe. They’ve got routes between pretty much every big city and even cover a lot of airports, so whether you’re hopping between major cities or trying to catch a flight, you’ve got plenty of options.
Reliable Rides: No More Bus Bingo
What I love about them is that they’re more reliable than public transport in most countries. No more standing-room-only buses or wondering if you’ll get a seat. With Flixbus, you book your ticket in advance, and voilà—you’ve got a seat assigned (like on planes). They’ve got a live tracker, so you’ll always know if your bus is running late or right on time. No more playing ‘Will my bus ever arrive?'(Hello anxiety, my old friend)
Also when it comes to finding your bus stop, it’s a breeze. They’ve got them clearly marked with Flixbus signs, and all the details like where to wait are laid out in the email confirmation you receive. No guesswork, no stress—just sit back and enjoy the ride! 😎
Price
Flixbus tickets are cheaper the earlier you book, so it pays to plan ahead.
Trains
Omio is my favourite search engine for trains. Not only does Omio find you the best train tickets, but it also allows you to search for buses (including Flixbus, though I prefer booking directly on their website) and flights. You can buy your train ticket directly on Omio, and they’ll send you a digital ticket with a QR code right to your phone. No more fumbling for paper tickets or stressing about losing them.
Travel Smart: The Cheap Ticket Advantage
In Europe, where train travel can be incredibly efficient and affordable, Omio helps you make the most of it. For example, traveling from Vienna to Budapest takes just 2-3 hours by train! That’s less time than it takes to watch an entire movie and snack on popcorn. So, why not explore one country and return from another? The options are practically endless! 🌍
Pro Tip: Save €10 on Your Next Adventure
If you register through my link here, you get €10 off your first order over €44. This can be for either a train or a bus ticket, so consider it a little travel bonus for your next trip.
I know this ‘think outside the Point A to B’ strategy might sound a bit complicated, but let me show you with an example how easy it can be.
Example
So, let’s say you’ve never been to Portugal, or maybe you went once and it was so amazing that you’re itching to go back. You’ve spotted a cheap flight from London to Faro for just £24.99. You’ve got a few days off, but your boss expects you back on Monday morning—no excuses. However, when you check the return flights (for Saturday/ Sunday), they’re looking a bit pricey.
No worries—here’s how you can turn that into an awesome, budget-friendly adventure:
1. If you like the price of the ticket from London to Faro, hold on to that for now.
2. Open Google and search for other international airports close to Faro. In this case, the search results show Lisbon and Seville (Spain).
Let’s leave Seville out for now since it’s in another country (unless you’re feeling even more adventurous 😃).
3. Check your favourite flight search engine to see if there are cheaper flights from Lisbon back home. Spoiler alert: yup, in this case even with the same airline!
4. Check if there are any bus connections between the city you’re flying to and the city you might potentially fly from. (in this case, Faro to Lisbon)

As you can see, there are multiple daily connections. The ticket cost ranges from £5 to £7 if bought in advance.
5. Buy:
A: Flight from London to Faro (£24.99)
B: Bus between Faro and Lisbon (£7)
C: Return flight from Lisbon to London (£33.73)

6. Plan how much time you will stay in each city and start counting down!
By breaking out of the A-to-B mindset, you’ll not only save money but also enjoy a richer travel experience.
Honestly! There are all sorts of possibilities out there. So next time you’re planning a trip, don’t limit yourself to just one spot. Embrace the freedom of travel and explore all the amazing destinations that the world has to offer. Trust me, your travel stories (and Instagram feed) will thank you for it.
Proof That It Works!
Here’s a quick rundown of how I took 9 days off work and turned it into an epic adventure across four countries, all while keeping my wallet happy.⬇️
-London – Prague (Czech Republic) / flight, easyJet✈️ (£24.99)

-Prague- Vienna (Austria)/ Train 🚆 (£14)

-Vienna – Venice (Italy)/ Train 🚆(£59- I know, it’s relatively more expensive but it was a last minute, YOLO sort of decision😃)

-Venice – Ljubljana (Slovenia) / Flixbus 🚌 (£16.99)

-Ljublana – London / Flight back home /Wizzair ✈️ (£29.99)
Anyway … the sky is the limit (and maybe a little bit of your bank balance 😉)
Honesty, if I had to choose just one trick for cheap flights that could save you the most money, it would be this one.
So, next time you’re booking a trip, remember that sticking to the traditional A-to-B-and-back model might just be limiting your travel potential. Experiment with different cities and airports to save money and see more of your destination!
10. Don’t Let Algorithms Trick You. ( Impact: Low)
Ever feel like your phone is that overly nosy neighbour who knows everything about you? Or notice how your social media is suddenly flooded with ads for exactly what you were just searching for?
Spoiler alert: It’s not just a coincidence—those sneaky algorithms are playing mind games with you. Websites often use dynamic pricing, which means that prices can change based on various factors, including demand and user behavior. If you repeatedly search for the same flight or hotel, some sites might increase the price as they detect heightened interest.
Here’s how to stay off their radar and save some cash:
- Set Up Alerts: We’ve talked about this already. Instead of obsessively checking for price changes, let technology do the work for you. You’ll be notified of any price changes, so you don’t need to worry about those sneaky algorithms noticing your obsessive clicks.
- Use Incognito Mode: When you’re checking prices, pop on that incognito mode like you’re in a witness protection program. This way, your previous searches won’t haunt you or influence the ticket prices. By using incognito mode, you reduce the data collected about your browsing behavior, which can help avoid some of these targeted tactics. It’s like hitting the reset button each time you search for cheap flights to keep those prices as low as possible. However, it’s important to note that while incognito mode helps with some aspects of tracking, it doesn’t make you completely invisible to websites.

Moment of truth:
Slipping into incognito mode might make you feel like a secret agent on a mission for cheap flights, dodging those price-hiking traps. But let’s be real, it’s not the superhero cape people think it is. Sure, it’s fun to pretend you’re in a spy movie, but let’s not get carried away. It helps a tiny bit, like choosing diet soda with your double cheeseburger -It’s something, but not a game-changer. 😂
As someone who spends a few hours every day hunting down the best flight deals, I can tell you firsthand, I’ve seen little to no difference in prices whether I’m cloaked in incognito mode or just browsing out in the open.
Demand, season, how many people clicked on the same flight as you within the last hour—these are the real puppet masters pulling the strings behind the curtain. So, while hiding your search history might provide some marginal benefits, it won’t dramatically change ticket prices by itself.
Remember, the strategies I discussed earlier are far more crucial for scoring those truly jaw-dropping deals. Incognito mode? That’s just the cherry on top. You need to mix it with the big moves if you really want to see those flight prices drop!
11. What Makes Cheap Flights Expensive AF
Have you ever wondered how airlines can offer flights for as little as £12? Surely that doesn’t even cover the cost of petrol per passenger. Let me tell you, my friend. Airlines generate a huge percentage of their revenue from all the extra fees they’re trying to charge you on top of that £12 flight.
They lure you in with the cheap headline price, but the real cost is in those add-ons.
But here’s the secret: You don’t have to pay for all those extras! With a little planning and know-how, you can avoid many of these fees and keep your trip budget-friendly.😎
But first, let’s break down how the price changes once you add all the extras like seats and additional luggage. This example is based on cheap flights from Ryanair (route London-Venice), but this approach applies to almost all budget airlines.
Case study: London- Venice

You start with a sweet deal on a Ryanair flight from London to Venice:
London – Venice: £19.80
Venice – London: £12.99
A round trip for under £33? You’re already imagining the gelato you’ll be buying with all that money you saved.
But hold up! Once you select your flight times (Ryanair offers three flights a day on this route), the real fun begins. Suddenly, Ryanair (and pretty much every other budget airline) does what it does best—tempts you with extras.

Value vs. Regular
If you stick with the basic ‘Value’ option, you’re still paying just £32.79 for that return flight. I think we all agree it’s not bad at all!
But if you want a seat of your choice and a little extra hand luggage, you’re bumped up to the “Regular” package, which suddenly has you forking out £90.29 for exactly the same flight.
That’s a whopping 275% increase.
I know, it’s crazy! One minute, you’re feeling like a budget travel pro, and the next, you’re questioning all your life choices.😅
Seat fee
‘What if I don’t get a seat?’ you might ask. Absolutely nothing happens. Nada. You’re still flying. I promise. When you book that super-cheap flight and opt out of paying for a seat, they’re not making you ride in the cargo hold, stand in the aisle or perch on the wing. The airline will just assign you a random seat at check-in, and here’s the magic word: FREE.
Now, let’s talk about the possible downside: If you’re flying with someone else, there’s a chance that ‘random’ means you might end up at opposite ends of the plane. From my experience, easyJet is the only budget airline that seems to think, ‘Hey, these two probably want to sit together’ and makes it happen without charging you extra. But don’t get too cozy with that idea–the budget airlines are full of surprises.
Here’s Where It Gets Controversial (and a little spicy…)
Is it really worth paying triple the price of your flight just to sit next to your friend or partner for a couple of hours? I mean, is your friendship—or marriage—worth that kind of cash?
Personally, I’m all about saving that money. I mean, come on, it’s just a couple of hours. You’ll survive. I’d rather pocket the extra cash and use it for something more fun at my destination. 😃 But if not sitting together might lead to a relationship crisis or a post-flight silent treatment, then sure, go ahead and pay up. (Let’s face it: Divorce costs way more than a seat reservation.)
Personal experience
In my 27 years on this planet, I’ve traveled with 29 different people (not all at once, of course—although that would be a fun challenge 😃). Sometimes, we’ve lucked out and ended up seated together, but most of the time, we didn’t. Guess what? The world didn’t end. We still had the rest of our vacation to hang out, so no big deal.
Here’s a piece of wisdom: Choose friends and partners who value cheap flights as much as you do. They’re the ones who won’t mind sitting apart for a bit, knowing that they’re saving money for more important things—like that extra round of cocktails at your destination 😃 (P.S.: In Venice, you can get an Aperol Spritz for as low as €3.50, so the ticket difference could buy you 16 cocktails. I know—WILD!)

Want to Up Your Chances of Sitting Together for Free?
Here’s a little hack for you: Check-in at the last minute. Yep, procrastination might just pay off. When you check in late, you’re more likely to get the leftover seats, which are sometimes the ones with extra legroom or, if you’re really lucky, together. It’s not foolproof, but it works about 6 out of 10 times.
If you’re still separated and can’t bear the distance, resort to extreme (but still free) solutions: politely ask the person next to you if they’d mind swapping seats with your travel buddy.
Worst case, they say “no,” and you’re out nothing. Best case, you’re reunited, and you can spend the flight talking about how much money you just saved (or just sleep, whatever).
Luggage

Most budget airlines let you bring either a handbag or a backpack for free (sizes vary, but you get the idea).
If you’re heading somewhere warm, all you really need is a backpack and some serious packing skills. I know it might sound crazy, but trust me, it’s totally doable. Just pack the essentials and skip the fifteen outfits you’ll never wear.
Think about it: if you haven’t worn that specific outfit in years, what are the chances you’ll suddenly feel inspired to wear it on holiday? Slim to none. Or that book you’ve been planning to read forever? It can live on your phone instead. Full-sized toiletries for a short trip? Just grab travel-sized ones or buy them when you get there.
If you want to discover the best hacks for packing (and maybe a few sneaky tricks on how to smuggle extra stuff for free), check out this post (link to be added as soon as it’s written 😃).
The Art of Packing Light: Your Ticket to Cheap Flights
Now, I get it—if you’re off for a two-week adventure somewhere chilly, you might need to bring some extra layers. But do you really need 20kg of clothes for a sunny getaway where you’ll be in a bikini or shorts most of the time?
For a short trip to a warm place, a backpack is your best friend.
Pro Tip: ‘Just in Case’ is Code for ‘Never Actually Used’
If you’re contemplating packing ‘just in case’ items, remember that ‘just in case’ often turns into ‘never actually used’. Keep it simple and only pack what you’ll actually need. Your back (and wallet) will thank you.
The Luggage Trap: Don’t Get Hooked on Bundles!
If you absolutely, positively can’t live without extra luggage, here’s the deal: buy it right away because that’s when it’s cheapest. But here’s a pro tip—don’t fall for those flashy priority + seat + luggage bundles. Once you’ve got your ticket selected, hold off and add the extra luggage closer to checkout. Those bundles might look convenient, but they’re usually way pricier than just adding luggage on its own.
So, next time you’re searching for cheap flights, just remember: the devil’s in the details—and the add-ons.
12. The Awkward Middle Child of Travel – Layover (Difficulty level: Hard)
I saved this trick for last because, let’s be honest, layovers are the least convenient option and not exactly a fan favourite. Nobody really wants them, but sometimes they’re a necessary part of the journey. Personally, I use this strategy as a final resort because the other hacks I’ve shared in this post are like my travel BFFs—they work 99% of the time! Having said that, consider a layover as the emergency parachute of travel hacks. 😂
However, while inconvenient, they can actually be a secret weapon for snagging cheap flights and maybe even a surprise adventure you didn’t know you needed.
Before I tell you more about how to use layovers to save money, let’s start with the differences.
The Quickie Layover:
This is the ‘quick pit stop’ variety. We’re talking a few hours between flights. You might think this is just an annoying wait, but it can actually be pretty sweet.
The Cheap Flights Bonus
And no, I am not talking about making the most of your time at the airport. Hell no. Get out of the airport and explore a new city! Seriously, some airports are located close enough to the city center that you can squeeze in a quick sightseeing trip, grab some local food, snap some Insta-worthy pics and still make it back in time for your connecting flight. You could end up visiting two destinations for the price of one!
Your Baggage-Free Adventure
If you’re wondering what to do with your bags while you’re out exploring during a layover, don’t worry—many cities have you covered. You see, many urban areas offer rental lockers where you can stash your luggage for a few hours.
And hey, if you followed the packing tips from earlier, traveling light is your secret weapon. With just a backpack or a compact bag, handling luggage becomes a breeze. So, drop your bag in a locker and hit the town. Just be sure to check the locker rental hours and locations ahead of time so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. Usually, they cost between 3 and 5 euros for a couple of hours.
Just don’t blame me if you end up missing your flight because you got lost in the city—that’s on you! 😜
Layover Logistics: Race Against the Clock
If your journey involves a layover with two different airlines, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to catch the next flight. Account for potential delays and don’t forget: if your flights aren’t booked on a single ticket, you’re on your own if something goes wrong. There’s no refund if you miss your connection, so plan wisely.
Airport Labyrinth: Find Your Way or Miss Your Flight
In case of short layovers, where you don’t have time to explore the city and need to stay on the airport—note that not all airports have dedicated transit areas for layovers. In some cases, if the airport doesn’t offer a transit area, you might have to go through immigration and customs, exit the airport, and then re-enter for your next flight, navigating through a labyrinth of terminals. It’s like a travel-themed escape room, minus the fun.😂 This means you’ll need to allow extra time to clear security and check in again, so—plan accordingly.
The Epic Layover:
This is the 12-hour or overnight layover—the extended stay where you can either be grumpy or make the most of it. But here’s where it gets even better: With longer layovers, you’ve got the chance to book a hotel or Airbnb and enjoy a proper visit (or get it for free; we’ll dive into this later). Imagine spending a night in a city you weren’t originally planning on exploring. You could enjoy a delicious dinner, visit some local attractions, and really soak in the place.

Voluntary Layovers: The Sneaky Way to Save Big
Enter the voluntary layover, where you deliberately choose to have an extra stop on your journey because—surprise!—it’s cheaper than a direct flight. On these shorter trips, adding a stop or two isn’t a necessity; it’s about cost efficiency.
If azair.eu becomes your go-to travel engine, you can adjust the maximum number of layovers and the number of days you’re open to waiting. For example, I’ve set it to max 2 days of waiting and 1 layover.
Involuntary Layovers: When You’re Stuck, But It’s Not So Bad
In many cases, direct flights just don’t exist. For example, if you’re flying from New York to a smaller destination in Southeast Asia, you’ll probably have to make a stop in a hub like Dubai, Singapore, or Tokyo because there are no direct options to where you’re going. This is where layovers come into play out of necessity. Or if there are direct flights, they’re often so much more expensive that it’s not even worth considering.
Here’s a little-known secret: many airlines offer free accommodations during layovers! That’s right—while most people are stuck thinking layovers mean hours of boredom in an airport lounge, you could be enjoying a free hotel stay.
Why is this a secret? Because it’s one of those travel perks that isn’t widely advertised. Many people don’t realize they can snag a free stay, complete with shuttle service and sometimes even meals, just by taking advantage of certain airline offers.

PSSST… Just a quick heads up:
I’ll keep this post as updated as I can, but airline policies do change pretty often. So, before booking, make sure to check the airline’s website for the latest info. Also, for most of these free accommodation deals you need to apply in advance, so make sure to sort that out too.
My personal experience
When I had a layover with China Southern Airways on my way to Bali (yep, one of the cheap flights I snagged from those sites I mentioned earlier in point 2), I decided to take advantage of their free accommodation offer (obviously! 😃). I applied in advance and got to choose from a few different hotels. It was fantastic—free hotel stay and shuttle service included! When I arrived at the airport, they already had everything ready for me.
I just needed to wait around 20 minutes for the shuttle to take me to the hotel. Just a warning: the staff didn’t speak much English, so that was a bit of a challenge. But hey, for free accommodation, I’m not complaining. I felt like I won the lottery of travel!🤩
The Visa Complex: Don’t Get Stuck!
Before you get all excited about your layover adventure, don’t forget to check the visa requirements for your layover city. Make sure your passport is in order and that you meet all entry requirements. You don’t want to get stuck in the airport because you’re missing a visa or didn’t know you needed one. A little prep now can save you from a lot of hassle and stress later on!
So, next time you’re planning your travels, don’t shy away from the layover option. Embrace it. Because in the end, isn’t a little bit of inconvenience worth the chance to create lifelong memories and brag about your incredible flight deal to literally everyone who will listen? 😎😜
Your wallet—and your sense of adventure—will thank you!

13. The Grand Finale: Mix It All Together for the Ultimate Cheap Flight Cocktail!
Alright, if you’re still here, congrats—you’ve unlocked the ultimate level of flight-hacking genius. You’ve learned the tricks, uncovered the secrets and now you’re just one step away from the final piece of the puzzle that will turn you into a true travel wizard.🧙
The Final Secret
To unlock those ultimate savings and land those dirt-cheap flights, you can’t just rely on one trick alone. You’ve got to mix them all together, like a witch brewing her most powerful potion, carefully experimenting with each ingredient until you’ve conjured up pure travel gold. This is where the magic happens—when all the strategies combine into one unbeatable force of savings.
Daily Rituals
First, dive into the flight deals websites I’ve shared like they’re your new daily dose of caffeine. Don’t just drop by once—make it a daily ritual, like brushing your teeth or scrolling through Instagram. Set them as your homepage if you have to. The more often you check, the better you’ll get at spotting those cheap flights hiding in the depths of the Internet. It’s like a daily treasure hunt, where the prize is your dream vacation at a price that’ll make your friends jealous.
Next, cosy up to those flight search engines like they’re your new best friends. Master their filters like a ninja, set up those price alerts like you’re prepping for Black Friday, and let them do the heavy lifting.
Timing Is Everything
Now, let’s talk timing. The earlier you book, the more likely you are to snag those cheap flights before they skyrocket at the last minute. When searching you should also aim for low-season and quieter times of the year. This often means avoiding major holidays and peak summer months when everyone and their grandma is trying to hit the same hotspots. It doesn’t just save you cash—it also means fewer tourists clogging up your perfect Instagram shots. It’s a win-win!
And remember, don’t be scared of layovers! They might seem like a travel nightmare, but they can actually lead to some killer deals and even surprise adventures. You can think of them as a bonus pit stop on your road trip to savings.💰
Be Flexible and Avoid Extra Fees
The most important strategy is: Be flexible. Like, yoga-class flexible. Be prepared to stretch and adapt. Explore different departure airports even if it requires a bit of extra driving or a change in your travel plans. When it comes to your destination, don’t limit yourself to just one city—expand your horizons and embrace the adventure. Remember, the more flexible you are, the more you can save.
And for the love of God, avoid the extra fees at all costs. Use your airline’s free baggage allowance wisely and pack with the precision of a Tetris champion.
So go forth, mix all these strategies and turn those travel dreams into reality. Happy flight hunting! ✈️
Congratulations, you’re officially the MacGyver of flight deals! ✈️
You have the power to conquer the world of cheap flights. Now arm yourselves with determination, a sense of humour, and a stable internet connection. Then unleash your inner travel ninja and embark on a quest for the most wallet-friendly flight ticket the world has ever seen. Your next adventure is just a search away! 🌍✈️
When you finally find that perfect flight deal that fits your budget, it’s like winning the lottery – except instead of money, you’re winning a chance to see the world.
Just be prepared for the occasional middle seat, broken TV screen, or overpriced airport sandwich. And if you do happen to find yourself sitting next to a crying baby on a 10-hour flight, just remember – you got a killer deal on that ticket…
Happy travels and may the cheap flights force be with you!
